Why Financial Institutions Are Rethinking Legacy AHU Systems?

For banks and financial institutions, HVAC systems are rarely viewed as strategic assets——Until they become a risk.

A recent AHU retrofit project for a leading financial institution in Singapore highlighted a challenge many commercial buildings are now facing:

The existing air handling units were still operating. Airflow requirements were being met. Occupants were comfortable.

Yet behind the scenes, the system was becoming increasingly expensive to operate and harder to justify in a world of rising energy costs, sustainability commitments, and long-term asset management objectives.

The question wasn't:

"Is the system working?"

The real question was:

"Is the system still the most efficient and resilient option for the next 10 years?"

Rather than replacing the entire HVAC infrastructure, the project focused on upgrading the heart of the air movement system.

The existing AC fan configuration was replaced with high-efficiency EC fan technology from ebm-papst.

♦ Project Highlights
• 140 EC fans installed
• Airflow range: 5,000–20,000 CMH
• Static pressure: 800 Pa
• Application: AHU Retrofit
♦ The Results

Before retrofit:

Fan power consumption: 4.99 kW

After retrofit:

Fan power consumption: 2.99 kW

Approximately 40% reduction in fan energy consumption while maintaining required airflow performance.

However, the significance of the project went beyond energy savings. For facilities operating around the clock, EC fan technology provided:

► More precise airflow control

► Improved part-load efficiency

► Reduced maintenance exposure

► Greater operational flexibility

► Lower long-term ownership costs

Across the financial sector, building owners are increasingly discovering that the most valuable retrofit projects are not always the most visible.

Sometimes, the greatest gains come from modernizing critical infrastructure already hidden behind the walls.

At Beijing Hengrui, we help customers evaluate HVAC retrofit opportunities from a system perspective—balancing efficiency, reliability, and long-term operational performance rather than focusing on equipment alone.

As commercial buildings continue pursuing both sustainability targets and operational resilience, are you seeing more organizations prioritize retrofit strategies over full system replacement?
