► Belt and bearing maintenance is increasing
► Variable-speed control is required

Complete AHU replacement becomes more appropriate when the cabinet is severely damaged, coils are undersized or beyond repair, air leakage is excessive, or the system requires a major capacity redesign.

Equipment age alone should not determine the decision. System condition and lifecycle cost should.

Why Replace an AC Fan with an EC Fan?

Traditional AHU fan systems commonly use AC motors with belts, pulleys, and separate mechanical components.An EC fan changes this architecture.

• Direct Drive

The motor and fan are integrated into a direct-drive assembly, eliminating the belt-and-pulley transmission system and its associated maintenance.

• Variable-Speed Operation

EC fans can adjust speed according to actual airflow demand, making them suitable for systems that operate under changing loads.

• Modlar Fan Grid

Multiple EC fans can operate in parallel. This allows airflow capacity to be distributed across several modules and can provide redundancy and easier maintenance.

The important point is that EC technology is not simply a more efficient motor replacement. A successful retrofit should improve the complete airflow system.

EC Fan or EC Fan Grid?

The configuration depends on the application.

A Fan Grid can be particularly useful where modularity, redundancy, access, and maintenance are important.

However, fan quantity and size should always be determined by the required operating point and available installation space—not by a fixed “more fans = better” rule.

A Real AHU Retrofit Example

In a HENGRUI commercial AHU retrofit project, the existing system delivered approximately 65,000 m³/h at 400 Pa using a traditional 30 kW AC fan system.

Instead of replacing the entire AHU, the fan system was upgraded with a modular EC Fan Grid.

The estimated input power decreased from approximately 30 kW to 17.4 kW, representing an estimated 42% reduction in fan energy consumption while maintaining the required airflow performance.

The retrofit also provided:

► Improved part-load control
► Fewer mechanical transmission components
► Easier maintenance

► Less disrption than a complete AHU replacement

What Data Do You Need Before Selecting the Fan?

For an AHU fan retrofit, start with these five key parameters:

Airflow + Static Pressure + Voltage + Existing Fan Model + Installation Dimensions

Additional information such as operating hours, current power consumption, control method, BMS requirements, temperature, humidity, and noise limits can further improve the selection.

The workflow should therefore be:

Measure → Analyze → Match → Retrofit

MEASURE — Establish the actual airflow, pressure, power, and installation conditions.

ANALYZE — Identify the main energy, maintenance, airflow, and control limitations.

MATCH — Select the EC fan or Fan Grid according to the actual operating point.

RETROFIT — Upgrade the fan system while preserving usable AHU infrastructure and minimizing downtime.
